Having an open, honest conversation with your young adult about the dangers and consequences of driving under the influence (DUI) is more than a lecture, it is an act of care. As they gain their independence, it is important they understand one bad decision behind the wheel can impact the rest of their life.
Start by approaching the conversation with empathy, not judgment. Acknowledge young adulthood comes with freedom, pressure, and sometimes risky decisions. Then, explain what a DUI means: not just legally, but personally. A DUI can lead to jail time, heavy fines, license suspension, increased insurance costs, a criminal record, and even the loss of scholarships or job opportunities. But beyond the penalties, remind them of the potential to harm themselves or others, something no night out is worth.
Use real-life examples or headlines if necessary, and be sure to clarify that DUI includes both alcohol and drugs, even those that are legal or prescribed. Encourage them to always plan ahead: designate a sober driver, use a rideshare app, or call you no matter the time, no questions asked.
Most importantly, make it a conversation, not a monologue. Ask how they feel, what situations they have seen among peers, and what their plan would be if they ever felt stuck. When young adults feel heard and supported, they are more likely to make safe choices.
