Not all agreements hold up in court! Here are some quick examples of valid and invalid contracts to keep you in the know:
Valid Contracts
- Lease Agreement: Renting an apartment for $1,200/month with clear terms and both parties’ signatures.
- Buying Goods: You pay $500 for a smartphone, and the store delivers it—simple and enforceable.
- Employment Agreement: A signed deal outlining job duties, pay, and benefits.
Invalid Contracts
- Illegal Purpose: Selling stolen goods? That’s a hard NO.
- No Consideration: A friend promises $1,000 without expecting anything in return—nice gesture, but not enforceable.
- Forced Agreement: If you’re pressured into signing, it’s not valid.
- Unclear Terms: Agreeing to “deliver something soon” with no specifics won’t hold up.
- No Writing (When Required): An oral agreement to sell real estate doesn’t count—it must be written!
